Kantkari
Kantkari is an Ayurvedic herb used for curing diseases and disorders mainly related to respiratory system such as cough, asthma, sore throat in its different forms. Its scientific name is Solanum Surattense and belongs to Solanaceae family. It is popularly called Indian nightshade or Yellow-berried nightshade. It is known as Choti Kateri in hindi.
It is one among Dashamoola – group of ten roots. Kantakari in Sanskrit means, the one which is good for throat. Kantkari is used in laryngitis, hoarseness of voice etc.
Chemical Constituents –
Major chemical constitutes of Kantakari are –
B-Carotene, Disgenin, Carpesterol, Solasodine, Solamargine, B- Solamargine, Solanine, Solasodino-L-Rhamnosy-B-D-Glucoside (Solasurine), Solanocarpine(Solanine-S), Tomatidienol etc.

Parts Used –
whole plant, root, fruit are the main parts of kantakari which are used for medicinal purposes.
Dosage–
• Kantakari powder 1-3 g
• Kantakari decoction – 40 – 80 ml
Benefits –
• Cough and cold
Cough is generally caused by the accumulation of mucus in the respiratory tract. Kantakari acts by balancing Kapha in the body and helps to expel out mucus accumulated in the lungs.
• Asthma
According to Ayurveda, the main doshas involved in asthma are Vata and Kapha. Kantakari helps in balancing Vata and Kapha and removes excess mucus from the lungs. This gives relief from the symptoms of asthma.
• Indigestion
The main reason for indigestion is aggravated Kapha that causes Agnimandya (weak digestive fire). Taking Kantakari powder helps to improve Agni (digestive fire) and digests the food easily.
• Osteoarthritis
Kantakari helps to reduce bone and joint pain when applied to the affected area. Applying a paste of Kantakari powder helps to reduce joint pain by balancing Vata.
Side Effects –
Its usage in Pitta disorders should be made with caution, due to its hot potency (Ushna Veerya).
It is safe to use in children and during lactation period.
