Muscle Atrophy
Muscle atrophy, also known as muscle wasting, is a medical condition characterized by the shrinking or loss of muscle mass. Muscle atrophy occurs when the size or number of muscle fibers decreases. This condition leads to a loss of strength and muscle function, which can affect one’s ability to perform everyday tasks and activities.
Types–
There are two primary types of muscle atrophy:
• Disuse Atrophy: This type of atrophy occurs when muscles are not used or stimulated adequately. It is commonly seen in individuals who lead a sedentary lifestyle or have limited mobility due to injury or illness.
• Neurogenic Atrophy: Neurogenic atrophy is associated with damage or disease affecting the nerves that control muscle movement. Conditions like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and peripheral neuropathy often lead to this form of atrophy.

• Chronic Illness: Conditions like cancer, HIV/AIDS, and kidney disease can cause muscle atrophy due to the body’s increased energy demands and metabolic changes.
Risk Factors –
Certain factors may increase the risk of developing muscle atrophy:

• Neurological diseases
• Chronic illnesses
• Malnutrition

Complications –
Muscle atrophy can lead to several complications, including:

Diagnosis –
Diagnosing muscle atrophy typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests, including:
• Physical Examination: A doctor will assess muscle size, strength, and range of motion.
• Imaging: Imaging techniques like MRI and CT scans can visualize muscle tissue and identify atrophy.
• Electromyography (EMG): EMG measures the electrical activity in muscles, helping to determine if there is nerve damage.
• Blood Tests: Blood tests may be performed to check for underlying conditions like malnutrition or hormonal imbalances.
Treatment –
The treatment of muscle atrophy depends on its underlying cause and severity. Here are some common approaches:
• Physical Therapy: Physical therapists can design exercise programs to help rebuild muscle strength and improve range of motion.
• Nutritional Support: Proper nutrition, including an adequate intake of protein and essential nutrients, is crucial for muscle recovery.
• Medications: In some cases, medications may be prescribed to manage symptoms or underlying conditions contributing to atrophy.
• Surgery: Surgical interventions may be necessary for specific cases, such as nerve compression or severe injuries.
• Assistive Devices: The use of assistive devices, like braces or mobility aids, can aid in maintaining independence and mobility.
• Lifestyle Changes: Encouraging a more active lifestyle and ensuring regular physical activity is essential in managing and preventing muscle atrophy.
Ayurvedic Perspective –
Mamsa dhatukshaya is the condition where the bulk of mamsadhatu (muscle tissue) is noticeably reduced with weakness. It is more visible at cheeks, neck, chest, abdomen, arms, legs and buttock region. Srotorodha (blocked channels of nourishment) in the mamsadhatu is the cause of dhatukshaya. Ayoga (reduced/ lack) of mamsakarma (functioning of muscles) leads to its kshaya. It can also be caused by ‘vyadhi karshana’ (debilitated due to certain diseases).
The common line of treatment includes internal medication to remove the srotorodha and reduce the symptoms; snehana (eg: abhyanga/ external application of medicinal oil), swedana (mild- eg: navara kizhi), nasya (nasal instillation of medicine), vasti (with decoction, oil), lepana (external application of pasted medicine) etc. Physiotherapy, yoga and meditation are used as supportive therapies.
Ayurvedic treatment helps to balance the Pitta dosha, and through Ahar and Vihar, it is supported that muscles regain strength and function properly. The power of Ayurveda lies in the use of herbs and spices in the treatment, ensuring the authenticity of the treatment.

• Giloy – This herb acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and reduces the damage to the muscle. It can also produce an antioxidant effect and protect the muscle tissues against–free radical damage.
• Arjuna- This herb is particularly beneficial for preventing the cardiac complications of this disease. It can improve the functions of the heart, ease the breathing and improve the quality of life.
• Brahmi- this herb helps to improve the muscle mass and enhance the functions of the nerves. It prevents oxidative damage to the muscle tissues and acts as an antioxidant.
