Bimbi/Ivy Gourd
Bimbi/Ivy Gourd is a climber multi branched perennial herb which grows all over the temperate region of India. Its leaves are petiolate, 5-10 cm long, entire to palmately lobed, minutely dentioculate. Flowers are white, solitary and axillary. Fruits ellipsoid or fusiform, 4-6 cm long round at both ends, having whitish lines in its surface, bright red when mature.The fruit of the plant is commonly used in recipes for soups and curries—it can also simply be pickled, fried or sauteed.
The plant is known by Kundru in Hindi, Ivy Gourd in English. It is also sometimes referred to as baby watermelon, due to its appearance, or gentleman’s toes.Its botanical name is Coccinia grandis which belongs to Cucurbitaceae family.
