Durva-Doob Grass
Durva-doob grass has been used for religious purposes in India for many centuries. It is believed that Lord Ganesha likes Durva grass very much. It is also called Doob in some parts of India.Durva grass is a perennial herb and you will not believe that it can be found comfortably all over the world. It is also called Bermuda grass in English and its scientific name is Cynodon dactylon, which belongs to Poaceae family.
Doob can grow upto 5-30 cm tall. Each stem is covered with multiple gray-green blades that are 5-15 cm long. Doob grass creeps on the ground, forming a dense mat. It requires a warm, sunny, and temperate climate (around 20 – 36 °C) to thrive.
There are three varieties –
(1) white (described above) – this is used in medicine
(2) Blue- this spreads over a large area and is also called as ananta, sahasraveerya, lata etc. and
(3) Ganda durva (gandiri) – this grows near the edges of small ponds.

Part Used –
Whole plant of Durva-doob grass is used for medicinal purposes.
Dosage –
• Juice of plant – 10 to 20 ml
• Decoction – 40 to 50 ml
• Powder – 2 to 4 gm

Durva grass has anti-microbial and antiseptic properties, which help in preventing dandruff caused by fungus or other causes.
• Epistaxis
Due to excessive heat, the membranes present inside our nose become dry and then after bursting, blood starts coming out of them.
Also called nosebleed. Apart from this, sinus problems can also cause a nosebleed. But, durva grass has cooling properties, which help in keeping the body cool and its anti-microbial properties combined with cooling effect give relief in the problem of nosebleeds etc.
• Diabetes
Doob grass has a hypoglycemic effect; thus, a mixture of neem and doob grass juice keeps blood sugar levels in check.
• Eyes Health
Applying doob grass juice around the eyes works as an eye cooler and relieves eye infections.
Walking barefoot on this grass, preferably during the morning time improves eyesight.
• Anaemia
The juice of doob is called green blood because drinking it can cure the problem of anemia.Doob helps by purifying the blood and increasing the red blood cells, due to which the level of hemoglobin increases.
• Skin Diseases
Durva grass has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, which provides relief from various skin related problems, such as itching, burning, rashes.
• Acidity
Durva grass is good in curing of acidity. To treat acidity, one should take juice of Cynodon dactylon (3-4 tsp) and water (1 glass) empty stomach in the morning. This mix is quite effective not only for acidity but also beneficial for stomach ulcer, colitis, and stomach infections.
• Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
Durva-doob grass is a good herbal remedy for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Durva grass is effective in case of prolonged menstrual durations. It is suggested that to control heavy menstrual period, one has to take the juice of bermuda grass and honey 3-4 times a day.
• Obesity
Durva-doob grass is good to control obesity and helps in weight loss. It is suggested that one should take juices of Bermuda grass twice a day to get good result. Prepare a decoction of conch grass (doob grass) (3tsp), black peppers (4-6 in no.) and pinch of cumin. It is recommended that one should take it twice a day with coconut water or butter milk.
• Wound Healing
The paste of Durva grass can be applied over fresh wound or ulcers to check bleeding and quicken the process of healing.
