Ushira is a perennial grass native to India and widely cultivated in tropical regions around the world. With its aromatic roots and numerous medicinal properties, Ushira has been used in Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine, for centuries. Its botanical name is Vetiveria zizanioides whichbelongs to family Gramineae. It is also known by Khas in Hindi.

Physical Appearance –
Ushira is a tall grass that can grow up to 6 feet in height. It has long, narrow leaves and dense tufts of rigid, fibrous roots. The roots are the most prized part of the plant due to their aromatic fragrance and therapeutic properties.

Part Used –
The main part of Ushira that is used for medicinal purposes is the root. The roots are harvested, cleaned, and dried before they are used in various preparations.

Usable part of ushira

Dosage and Preparation –
Ushira can be used in different forms, including powders, extracts, and essential oils. The dosage and preparation method may vary depending on the desired application. Here are some common ways Ushira is used:
•  Ushira Powder: Take 1-3 grams of Ushira powder and mix it with water or honey. Consume this mixture two to three times a day.
•  Ushira Decoction: Boil 10 grams of Ushira root in 500 ml of water until the volume reduces to one-fourth. Strain the liquid and consume it in divided doses throughout the day.
•  Ushira Essential Oil: Add a few drops of Ushira essential oil to a carrier oil like coconut oil or sesame oil. Use this mixture for external applications such as massage or aromatherapy.

•  Urinary Tract Infections
It is diuretic in nature, which helps in increasing urine production and flushing out toxins. It is beneficial in treating urinary tract infections and reducing the risk of kidney stones.

Precautions –
This herb is generally safe to use, still there are a few precautions to keep in mind –
•  Allergy: Some individuals may be allergic to Ushira. It is recommended to perform a patch test before using any its any product.
•  Pregnancy and Lactation: Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider before using it.
•  Drug Interactions: It may interact with certain medications. If you are taking any prescription medications, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional before using this herb.
