Prakriti
Prakriti (Essential Constitution) is doshic constitution you are conceived with. There is usually a mixture of doshas with one dosha dominating. This is your essential nature that will remain constant for life. It determines the distinctive qualities of your mind and body when you are in balance. Knowing what your dosha is provides invaluable information that will help you get in touch with your body’s inner intelligence.
Determining Factors –
Prakṛiti (प्रकृति, “constitution”).—The constitution (prakriti)of a person is decided by the doṣa predominant associated with fetus (garbha) is determined by following factors:
• constitution of sperm and ovum,
• the time (of conception) and status of health of uterus
• diet and lifestyle of mother (during pregnancy) and
• interaction of mahabhuta.
Benefits of knowing someone’s prakriti –
Each Prakriti has different characteristic features. The concept of Prakriti makes Ayurveda unique from other medical systems.
Selection of treatment, medicine is different for each individual depending upon their Prakriti. Ayurveda also suggest about food which is conductive, foods which need to be avoided according to Prakriti. Assessment of Prakriti analysis will not only help in understanding the physical and mental constitution of patient, but also plays a vital role in prognosis, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of many diseases.
Daihic (Physical) Prakriti –
The constitution at the combination of sperm and ovum (fertilization) which becomes almost fixed for the whole life.
• Vātika (vāta-prakṛti),
• Pittaka (pitta-prakṛti),
• Kaphaja (kapha-prakṛti).
Mansik (Psychic) Prakriti –
Constitution is also decided on the basis of psychic qualities—
• Sāttvika (sattva-prakṛti),
• Rājasa (rajas-prakṛti),
• Tāmasa (tamas-prakṛti).
Similarly there are also bhūtaprakṛtis (constitution according to predominance of bhūtas) which can be known from their respective features.
Vikriti (Imbalance)
Vikriti is the set of imbalances that you are currently experiencing in the body and mind. An Ayurvedic practitioner tailors the therapies to address these imbalances. For example, if one is experiencing dryness in the system, then eating more soups, drinking warm teas, and adding demulcents may be the appropriate therapy to counteract the dryness.
To know a person, one should examine his constitution properly. The man should fix his routine according to his constitution in mind. Similarly, the physician should keep the constitution in mind while prescribing medicines (and diet) for a patient.
