Kunjal Kriya

Kunjal Kriya, also known as the “stomach cleansing technique” or “vaman dhauti,” is a yogic practice that involves drinking a large amount of saltwater to induce vomiting and cleanse the stomach. It is a part of Hatha Yoga and is believed to have several benefits for digestive health.
Materials Required –
• Warm water: Approximately one liter of lukewarm water is typically used for kunjal kriya.
• Salt: Non-iodized salt, such as rock salt or sea salt, is mixed in the water. The recommended ratio is around two teaspoons of salt per liter of water.
• Towels: Have a few towels nearby to clean up after the practice.
How to Perform Kunjal Kriya –
• Empty stomach: It is essential to perform kunjal kriya on an empty stomach. Make sure you haven’t eaten anything for at least 4-6 hours prior to the practice.
• Prepare the water: Dissolve the salt in lukewarm water until it is fully dissolved.

• Drink the water: Stand near a sink or basin and slowly drink the entire liter of saltwater. Drink it in small sips, allowing your body to adjust to the taste and temperature. It may take a few minutes to finish the entire amount.
• Stimulate vomiting: After consuming the water, bend forward and try to induce vomiting by tickling the back of your throat with your index and middle fingers. Do this until you start vomiting. The water, along with any impurities or mucus from your stomach, will be expelled.
• Repeat if necessary: In some cases, you may need to repeat the process until the water comes out clear and your stomach feels completely cleansed.
• Rinse and rest: After vomiting, rinse your mouth and gargle with clean water. Take a few moments to rest and allow your body to recover.
Benefits of Kunjal Kriya –
• Cleansing the stomach: Kunjal kriya helps to remove accumulated toxins, mucus, and undigested food from the stomach, promoting better digestion and preventing digestive disorders.
• Improved digestion: By removing toxins and stimulating the digestive organs, kunjal kriya can enhance overall digestion and nutrient absorption.

• Respiratory benefits: The practice may provide relief from respiratory conditions like asthma, allergies, and bronchitis by clearing congestion and reducing mucus in the respiratory system.
• Mental clarity: Some practitioners believe that kunjal kriya helps to clear the mind and improve mental focus.
• Detoxification: The practice is considered a detoxification technique as it flushes out impurities from the body.
Precautions –
• Consult a professional: If you are new to kunjal kriya or have any pre-existing medical conditions, it is advisable to consult with a qualified yoga instructor or healthcare professional before attempting the practice.
• Perform under guidance: Initially, it is recommended to learn and practice kunjal kriya under the guidance of an experienced yoga teacher.
• Empty stomach: Ensure that you have an empty stomach before performing kunjal kriya to minimize the chances of discomfort or complications.
