Rohitakarhishta

Rohitakarhishta is an Ayurvedic medicine, which is used mainly in the treatment of liver and spleen related disorders. It is fermented Ayurvedic preparation which contains 5-10% of self-generated alcohol. Rohitaka is its main ingredient.
Ingredients –
• Rohitaka – Stem bark – Tecomella undulata – 4.8 kg
• Dhataki – Flower – Woodfordia fruticosa – 768 g
• Jaggery – 9.6 kg
• Pippli – Long pepper fruit – 48 g
• Pipplimool – Long pepper root – 48 g
• Chavya – Stem – Piper cubeba – 48 g
• Chitraka – Root – Plumbago zeylanica – 48 g
• Ginger – Rhizome – Zingiber officinale – 48 g
• Cinnamon – Stem bark – Cinnamomum zeylanicum – 48 g
• Cardamom – Seed – Elettaria cardamomum – 48 g
• Patra – Leaves – Cinnamomum tamala – 48 g
• Triphala– Haritaki (fruit rind), Vibhitaki (fruit rind) and Amla (fruit) – 48 g each

Dosage –
The general dosage of Rohitakarishta is as follows –
• Children (above the age of 5 years) 2.5 to 10 ml
• Adults10 to 30 ml
• Maximum Possible Dosage 60 ml Per Day (in divided doses)
Doses – Twice a day with equal amount of water
Best Time to Take – After Food
Benefits –
• It is widely used to treat splenomegaly and other spleen related problems.

• It is effective in treating abdominal colic.
• It is used in the treatment of ascitis, liver disorders, sprue, piles and jaundice.

• It also increases the bile flow and has a protective action on liver and gall bladder.
• It is useful in skin diseases, inflammatory conditions and anorexia.
• It is helpful in treating anemia.

• It reduces the toxins developed due to viral, bacterial or parasitic infections
Side Effects –
• People with sensitive stomach should avoid taking it as this medicine may worsen gastritis symptoms or if necessary it should be taken in Ayurvedic physician supervision.
• In higher doses, it may lead to gastritis complaints such as burning sensation in stomach.
• It contains Chitrak, which can increase uterine contractions and may promote uterine bleeding. Therefore, pregnant women should not take Rohitakarhishta.
• Rohitakarhishta is possibly safe to consume by lactating mothers.
