Diminished Ovarian Reserve
Diminished ovarian reserve is the loss of normal reproductive potential in the ovaries due to a lower count or quality of the remaining eggs.Ovarian reserve refers to the reproductive potential left within a woman’s two ovaries based on number and quality of eggs.
It’s sometimes called low egg count or low ovarian reserve. Your eggs are the building blocks (along with sperm) for pregnancy. Your egg count will decrease as you age, but this happens sooner than expected for some people. Diminished ovarian reserve makes it harder to get pregnant.
Eggs you may have as per your age –
Actual numbers vary from person to person, but these are the average number of eggs you have throughout life –
• Birth: 1 to 2 million eggs.
• Puberty: 300,000 to 400,000 eggs.
• Age 40: 25,000 eggs.
• Menopause: less than 1,000 eggs.
Symptoms –
Most people don’t have symptoms other than not getting pregnant after months or years of regular sexual intercourse.
Some other symptoms you may notice –
• Smaller menstrual cycle
• Hot flashes.
• Irregular menstrual periods.
• Vaginal dryness.
Causes –
Aging is one of the biggest causes of low ovarian reserve.
Some other causes may have –
• Genetic disorders that affect the X chromosome.
• Radiation or chemotherapy (cancer treatment).
• Having surgery on your ovaries.
• Losing one or both of your ovaries.
• Autoimmune conditions.
Diagnosis –
AMH level need to be checked to confirm the diagnosis of ovarian reserve condition. A typical Anti-Mullerian hormone(AMH) level for a fertile woman is 1.0–4.0 ng/ml. Levels under 1.0 ng/ml are considered low. Low AMH levels indicate a diminished ovarian reserve.
Ayurvedic Treatment –
Three aspects of Ayurvedic treatments i.e. shamana, shodhana and rasayana could be incorporated to improve AMH levels and increases chances of conception.
• Shamana
Shamana treatments include internal medications to balance the ‘dosha’, improve metabolism (deepana and pachana) and improve hormonal balance. If you have other conditions like thyroid issues, overweight or obesity, diabetes or insulin resistance, etc medicines will be prescribed to correct those conditions too.
• Shodhana
Shodhana treatments include taking the metabolic toxins out of the body and thereby correcting the metabolism and physiological balance. Shodhana includes panchakarma procedures including nasyam, vamanam, virechanam, vasti and raktamokshan. Ayurvedic doctor will select specific therapy according to your specific dosha condition, health, and hormonal levels.
Special treatments like uttara vasti, yoni pichu, etc shall also be incorporated in treatment to improve AMH and fertility.
• Rasayana
Rasayana includes medicines, lifestyle changes, and diet which will rejuvenate the body and improve physical strength, hormonal balance, and reproductive health.
Ayurvedic medicines for improving fertility includes Dadimadi ghritam, Phal ghrita, Ashwagandha churna, Shatavari churna, Shatapushpa churna, Saraswatharishtam, Pushpadhanva ras, Pushyanug churna, Bala taila etc. Deepana pachana medicines like Vaiswanara churnam, Hingwashtak churnam etc also support the treatments.
